About AWCFS

The African Woman and Child Features Service (AWC) is a Nairobi-based media organisation with an African regional outlook.

AWC has been active in training journalists and other media practitioners as well as NGOs in the region in the area of gender, media and development. It has assisted in the production of training manuals for organisations, gender mainstreaming policies and content for media houses and training women on how to access and effectively use the media for development.

  • Gender and Governance Programme
    The Gender and Governance Programme (GGP), is a national programme that seeks to ensure a focused, coordinated and long-term support towards women’s enjoyment of human rights and participation in democratic governance.

    It was launched on Tuesday 22 March 2005 at the Bomas of Kenya. GGP is implemented by AWC, Africa Centre for Women in ICT, Association of Media Women in Kenya, Catholic Justice and Peace Commission, Development Through Media, Education Centre for Women in Democracy, Kenya Women’s Political Caucus, Women’s Political Alliance-Kenya and the Youth Coalition.

    The core focus of the programme is:
    • Strengthening the Legislative, Policy and Institutional Framework.
    • Gender Equality and Women’s Participation in Local governance.
    • Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Political Party Process.
    • Strengthening Parliamentary Initiative for Gender Equality.

    The main aim of this programme is to strengthen the argument through research the way in which gender and its intersection with other key social categories of marginalization and discrimination is addressed within East Africa and how various organizations in the region have addressed this issue through their work.
