| Women seek guarantees in the fight against HIV/AIDS |

             Women living with HIV/AIDS have called on governments to reconsider policies that encourage stigmatisation. Ludfine Anyango a woman living with HIV/Aids, says that women bear the greatest burden when it comes to the disease. “Privatisation of healthcare will only worsen an already bad situation,” she noted, “the burden of home-based care (HBC) for people with HIV/AIDS is shouldered by women without the resources to support them.” Women point out that government ought to guarantee them an enabling environment that will secure their livelihoods to become economically empowered, and avoid being in vulnerable situations. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Zachary Ogongo explains that the government is addressing the HIV/Aids issue by addressing issues related to poverty and development.
He adds that government is committed to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which address issues related to poverty, women’s empowerment, attainment of Universal Primary Education (UPE) and improvement of livelihoods. They have also asked the government and other stakeholders to keep the promises made in the fight against HIV/AIDS, especially making access to anti-retroviral therapies at the grassroots a possibility. At the community level, the Norwegian Church Aid has been working in Kitui to address HIV/AIDS issues at the grassroots level. Communities cite the successes of the Mully Children’s Family, Catholic Diocese of Kitui and the Movement of Men against HIV/Aids amongst several grassroots organizations that have taken a proactive stand in the face of HIV/AIDS.Catholic Archbishop Ndingi Mwana a Nzeki says that 26.7 percent of world institutions that care for people with HIV/AIDS are sponsored by the Catholic Church. Rachel Arunga, permanent secretary for special projects in the office of the president says that the fight against the disease has been taken to the district and location level, to ensure that communities have is access to prevention, treatment and care. |

The African Woman and Child Feature Service, the Kenya Archival Study Group and the Ford Foundation office in Nairobi, Kenya will hold the Preservation, Conservation and Restoration of Audio Visual Media Conference. The conference will be held at the National Museums of Kenya in Nairobi, from December 3rd – 5th 2008. |
