Press Release: Land Policy Symposium PDF Print E-mail

WHAT:            National Symposium on Land Policy

WHEN:            Thursday 26th and Friday 27th April

TIME:              8.30 am – 5.00 pm

WHERE:          Kenyatta International Conference Theatre (Amphitheatre)

On Thursday 26th April 2007 and Friday 27th April 2007, the National Land Policy Formulation Process comes to fruition at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) amphitheatre, Nairobi on the occasion of a National Symposium bringing 700 stakeholders together to deliberate on the Draft Land Policy.

The Draft Land Policy summarises issues of land development, use, management and administration in Kenya and recommends a broad framework of policy directions and options.  The emphasis in the proposed policy is a shift from land ownership to sustainable utilization and should it be adopted as a full-fledged national policy it will serve as a platform for broad-based reforms in the land sector in Kenya.

Land is one of the most important resources in the country.  It is key to economic growth and plays a central role in national and local development.  The management of land is a critical requirement for sustainable development and the Draft National Land Policy addresses the various opportunities to reverse the negative trends and to optimize the possibilities for sustainable development.

The Draft Land Policy is a product of the National Land Policy Formulation Process that begun in February 2004 when the Ministry of Lands convened a National Land Policy Symposium that brought together representatives of various institutions, organizations and social actors concerned with land development and management issues.

The process also involved the establishment of a national land policy steering committee to guide the policy process as well as a number of thematic groups that were responsible for data collection, analysis and the formulation of policy recommendations in all sectors.

The two-day National Symposium seeks to build consensus on the adoption of the Draft National Land Policy leading to the preparation of a Sectional paper for debate and adoption by Parliament.  An expected outcome is the continued public sensitization and awareness creation on the Draft National Land Policy.
