WHEN: TUESDAY 31ST JULY 2007 TIME: 7.30 AM WHERE: NORFORK HOTEL Background Information on expanding democracy to ensure increasing women’s representation in Parliament
As the call to increase the number of electoral constituencies’ gains momentum, women organizations are calling on political parties to embrace affirmative action as a strategy for ensuring more women get into parliament during this year’s general election. A National Negotiating team led by Dr. Edah Gachukia, Ida Odinga, Phoebe Asiyo, and Dr. Julia Ojiambo will tomorrow meet with KANU leaders to lobby the party and getting the party’s senior politicians to fully commit to affirmative action during this year’s general elections and support the bill in Parliament. The negotiating will take a similar message to other leading political parties this week. The women will among other issues present their proposal to KANU leaders on how they would like the various parties to support 50 seats for women through party lists as a way of achieving the 30 percent representation in Parliament.
