The African Woman and Child Feature Service held a second seminar for media correspondents on July 27th, 2007 at the Sportsman Arms Hotel in Nanyuki. Twenty-five journalists from Central, Eastern and North Eastern Provinces of Kenya attended.
The workshop was an opportunity for reporters to explore the issues they are facing during this election year. Journalists used case studies from their region to come up with innovative ways of reporting on key concerns such as the place of women in competitive politics and the argument for equal political representation by women. As part of the discussion of gender sensitive reporting, the participants debated ethics and professional standards in journalism. The workshop was intended to provide journalists with an analytical framework for understanding and addressing diversity, gender, governance and democracy issues in an election year. Participants discussed the media’s role in educating the public about diversity and gender issues both in the print and broadcast media. |
