Security Training for women aspirants in Mombasa PDF Print E-mail
WHAT: Security Training for women aspirants in Mombasa

WHEN: Friday 26th October, 2007

TIME: 8.30 am – 5.00 PM

WHERE: YWCA Holiday and Conference Centre, Likoni

The recent emergence of violent incidents against female political aspirants is raising concern among local and international partners committed to a free and fair electoral process. Electoral violence takes several forms – including sexual abuse, psychological, emotional or physical harm that is specifically directed against women candidates and their supporters. It also includes threats of such acts. Nationally, at least six women aspirants have reported being beaten and attacked by gangs, with more being insulted and threatened though different forms of media such as emails and short message texts.

The Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Anna Brandt will address security concerns for women aspirants and the real concerns occasioned by incidents of electoral violence and its consequences on the women’s candidature. She will be accompanied by the Norwegian Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Elisabeth Jacobsen and the Counsellor for Governance at the Embassy of Finland, Dr Sirkku Hellsten. The Ambassadors’ event takes place from 3.00 pm. Also present at this event will be the YWCA Director, Mrs Grace Okello.
