1ST APRIL 2008 WHAT: A PUBLIC DEBATE ON ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY IN THE CONDUCT OF THE 2007 ELECTIONS WHO: DR CHARLES OTIENO : EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, POLITY AND POLICY DATE: WEDNESDAY 2ND APRIL 2008 TIME: 8.30 AM - 12.OO NOON WHERE: SAROVA STANLEY , NAIROBI, KENYA The recent disputed general elections in Kenya and the spate of violence witnessed in the aftermath, have brought renewed attention to our claim to democracy, and more so, to the role of Electoral Commission of Kenya and political parties in expanding democracy and civil liberties. Kenya is gradually losing its standing and credibility in the community of nations as an open and democratic society. The fundamental lesson is acknowledging the challenge of reclaiming the democratic space, as well as putting in place mechanisms for nurturing it. In addition, there is need to strengthen the Political Parties. The strength in this case entails issues regarding information to the citizenry, and resource allocation. In order to accomplish the objectives, the pubic needs to be acknowledged as an important link from which these issues of concern can be discussed and a way forward generated. Through the space created for the citizens, it becomes easier to highlight and condemn as is appropriate, issues of injustices and inequality, recognized as key impediments in the search for lasting peace in our country. Political parties also play a very important role in representing societal interests within the state and have done so since independence. This is due to the fact that the principle representation in a democracy hinges on the existence of political parties. However, their impact with regard to democracy has been continually undermined by the absence of an effective regulatory framework in their financing. The half day Public Debate, whose Theme is, Accountability and Transparency in The Conduct and Funding of the 2007 Elections is expected to attract over 70 participants from civil society, academics, researchers, media, development partners among others. As a key partner in development and information dissemination we welcome your presence and contribution to this debate. CONTACT PERSONS Peter Oriare Mbeke DR.
