WHAT Dissemination of Study Findings.

Study on the mainstreaming of reproductive health and other issues affecting young people into the political discourse and broader development agenda in Kenya

WHO: Centre for the Study of Adolescents

WHEN:  Thursday 10th April, 2008

TIME:    9.00 AM – 1.00 PM

WHERE: Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi

A study conducted by the Centre for the Study of Adolescence (CSA) in October and November 2007, on the mainstreaming of reproductive health and other issues affecting young people into the political discourse and the broader development agenda in Kenya sought young people’s views on the extent to which issues of critical concern to them were integrated into campaign messages and how politicians and policy makers handled them.

Two thousand young people were interviewed in the study in all eight provinces in Kenya and the study shows that young people believe politicians are ignoring their priorities.

In the context of the recent post-election violence that engulfed Kenya, the findings of this study are important in the dialogue between the youth and their leaders.  Politicians have been faulted by young people for ignoring issues of employment, education and crime as well as reproductive health and rights issues that need urgent intervention.

While some priorities identified by the youth may be similar to those of their leaders, there is a mismatch between the focus of politicians and what young people see as critical priorities.
