27TH May 2008

Who The Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH)

What:  Conference on Choice in Care for HIV-Positive Africans:  The Role of Herbal Medicine

Where: Fairview Hotel

Date:     27th – 29th May 2008 from 8. 30am

Background information

The Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health (TICAH) will host a conference entitled:  “Traditional Medicine and HIV: Treatment, Research and Resources.”  From May 27-29 at the Fairview Hotel from 8.30 am

The aim of the conference is to identify strategies to better integrate herbal medicine into AIDS treatment, care and research. The participants include medical researchers; AIDS care providers, program managers, donors, and HIV-positive activists.  Several experts in alternative and complementary medicine from Europe and the United States will join experts in herbal medicine from Nigeria, Tanzania, South Africa, Uganda, and Kenya.

This conference is supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, and builds on a three-year project to broaden AIDS care options for positive people in Asia and Africa.

This work has included research on the care choices that positive people are making and on the health outcomes that result from those choices.

It also builds on TICAH’s efforts to design research protocols which are appropriate for the study of herbal remedies now in use in Asia and Africa for AIDS-related illnesses and on an analysis of the gaps between current AIDS treatment programs and the needs and desires of positive people, many of whom wish for more choices in the care available to them.

The majority of HIV-positive people in Asia and Africa use herbal medicines, either alongside conventional therapies or in place of them.  Still, very little funding or research attention has been paid to these aspects of care.

The participants will also help to launch a beautiful new medicinal plant garden at the National Museums of Kenya which TICAH and Sanctuaries have built with the help of the Africa Fund for Endangered Wildlife.
