10th January 2008 WHAT: Kenyan women’s voices have been largely absent from the ongoing mediation and other political processes to resolve the post-election crisis gripping Kenya. The Women’s Consultative Forum convened by Urgent Action Fund-Africa will brief the Press on its deliberations. WHEN: Friday, 11 January 2008 TIME: 10.00 am WHERE: Fairview Hotel, Bishop’s Road, Nairobi
Women in Kenya represent the majority of voters yet they are the community most affected by the on-going political violence around the country in the past fortnight. Women form the majority of those displaced and they have also been subjected to gender specific forms of violence including rapes, physical and verbal assaults – in addition to losing their homes and livelihoods. A group of women cutting across all political ethnic and religious diversities have been meeting in Nairobi over the current post-election crisis engulfing Kenya. The group comprises peace builders, politicians and women’s rights champions under the umbrella of the Women’s Consultative Forum convened by the Urgent Action Fund-Africa. They will address the Press on their role and involvement in the evolving mediation and other political processes as they seek to bring leadership and resolution to the conflict.
