Capacity Building with Educators in schools on how to resolve conflict

Despite the fact that there are a number of on-going interventions aimed at addressing the post-election crisis as well as findining ways to address the Comprehensive constitutional review ,Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission, Independent Review Committee and Commission of Inquiry on Post-Election Violence to solve the current security situation, there are a number of gaps that exists within the post-election conflict that requires attention.

The TJRC is a clear example, where a bill is already in draft form and no information is in the public domain on how they are going to engage with the process.

Youth and women marginalization, exclusion and neglect have been a key factor and follow-up discussions on their role in the conflict and how they are going to be engaged in conflict mitigation.

Although in the various programmes, the youth involvement feature prominently, there is no coordinated interventions backed by research on any best practices.

Though there has been a number of promises from the side of state-actors with regards to addressing youth grievances, there is very little that has been done to keep this promise.

This project therefore will focus on training young people in conflict management, reconciliation, advocacy, and other discipline that are related to advocacy.

The reason for this is that young people should have a clear and comprehensive agenda that they will present to state and non-state actors for implementation. This agenda will also have to be monitored through the media and assess with regards to the impact and progress on the implementation of the TJRC and other initiatives. A Peace and Security News newspaper will be produced on a weekly basis in English and Kiswahili and disseminated to peace, security and development actors at all levels of the society.

In addition to this young people in the mentioned project areas will design a number of community conflict mitigation and reconciliation programs, such as awareness raising, focused group discussions, sports, music dance and drama activities that will focus in promoting community conflict mitigation and reconciliation issues at community levels with an aim to reduce community vulnerability to conflict and the impact on their livelihoods.

 School Peace Education

Through media clubs and the various media programmes, the need to broaden and deepen the basis for conflict prevention over the long term, the program will work with educators (e.g., Kenya Institute of Education, School radio programmes, education officers, school directors, and classroom teachers) to familiarize them with ways in which they can help children learn how they can resolve disagreements without resorting to violence, and ways to socialize their students in traditionally accepted approaches to non-violent conflict resolution methods
