Documentation of Inter-Linkages:HIV,GBV & Conflict

African Woman and Child Features Service will be documenting inter-linkages between HIV/Aids and Gender-based Violence in conflict and post conflict scenarios, in this case looking at the 2007/8-post election crisis in Kenya.

This project starts at a time when Kenyans are preparing for the Truth Justice and Reconciliation TJRC and the Constitution making process thus a strategy for women in Kenya to participate.

This documentation process is designed to assist women seek justice for violence meted against them. This engagement is further expected to influence formulation of policies and putting in place of mechanisms that will safeguard women’s rights in future conflict situation.

This project is supported by the Urgent Action Fund and will involve mapping of Policy Responses by using the experience of the unheard voices of Women affected by Violence.

As part of the activities for this project, there will be 2 Online Editions documenting experiences of women during the Post Election Violence, with an aim to link issues of HIV, Gender based violence (GBV) and conflict.

What other partners are doing around this project:

 

Woman Fighting Aids in Kenya (WOFAK)

  • Community dialogue sessions with community leaders, women groups and other institutions that will enhance the promotion and protection of women’s human rights.
  • Support human rights champions to carry out outreach into the community to increase awareness on human rights, seeking legal redress, recognizing and reporting human rights violations.

 

Centre for Rights and Awareness (CREAW)

 

  • Hold workshops within Kibera on sexual offences Act and gender based violence
  • Carry out community radio programme on the sexual Offences Act
  • Conduct community forums on human rights, sexual and gender based violence and the Sexual Offences Act

 

FIDA-Kenya

  • Enhance the timely, informed and structured engagement of women and women’s rights organizations with the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission and other reforms and transitional justice mechanism in Kenya.

 

Rural Women’s Peace Link;

 

  • Medical and psychological intervention to address the sexual and psychological consequences of conflict on women in the district.
