Safeguarding Women Rights in Transitional Justice

A project of African Woman and Child Feature Service(AWCFS) in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa(OSI-EA).

The journey towards gender equality has been long and winding. Over the years, women have struggled to penetrate decision making platforms so as to influence policy therefore alleviating the plight of women.

But never have women being so close to achieving their objective as they are now ; Kenya is at a crossroads as we move from the old Constitution into the new one which has tremendous gains for women. It is against this backdrop that it becomes significant for women to position themselves strategically within this transitional process.

In this regard, AWCFS with the support of OSI-EA has been holding media encounters across the country that bring together journalists and community women to deliberate on the significance of safeguarding women rights within the transitional justice mechanisms in Kenya.

Coast Media Encounter

Although women in Kenya form the majority of the population and consequently the majority of potential voters, they remain a marginalized group who are more often news objects rather than news makers.

In addition, they continue to play at the periphery of mainstream politics and significant decision making processes. This is much evident in the current political mood in the country and clamor for reforms.

It is against this background that the African Woman and Child Features partnered with The Open Society Initiative for Eastern Africa, to bring community women and the media from Mombasa and its vicinity together, in order to map out a way forward.

The African Woman and Child Features (AWC) in partnership with the Open Society Initiative for East Africa take Media Encounter to Kisumu.

The activity is one of a series of media encounters held in various parts of the country.

The objectives of the activity were therefore to;

  • Create awareness with regard to the progress of the current reform processes.
  • Engender the reform processes
  • Give women an opportunity to map out their space within these processes
  • Give the media and women a forum to engage with regard to reform agenda
  • Share experiences especially in regard to how the post election violence impacts on the community’s drive to participate in the reform process
