Each year worldwide, an estimated 13 million births take place among young women between the ages of 15 to 19. In Kenya every year up to 13,000 girls leave school due to pregnancy. In fact, teenage pregnancy is one of the reasons why girls leave school in many parts of this country. According to available statistics half of girls in Kenya begin child bearing before age 20 years. About 250,000 girls between ages 15 to 19 procure abortions. Every year Kenyan families lose an estimated 806 million shillings due to school girl drop out.

The month of May is designated as the “Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month”. The Centre for the Study of Adolescence in collaboration with the Adolescent Empowerment Network (AEN) invites you to a function to mark the Teen pregnancy prevention month to be held at the Railway Club Grounds (next to Uhuru Park) in Nairobi, on Saturday 29nd May starting at 9.00am to 12.30 p.m.

The aim of this meeting is to catalyze government and citizen action to recognize the negative impact of teenage pregnancy on the country’s social and economic development and to advocate for enhanced implementation of existing policies support access to comprehensive life skills education to enable the girls deal with the negative consequences of sexuality which significantly affect their enrolment, retention and completion of school.
