The Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice based in The Hague, the Netherlands, has been monitoring the ICC investigation in relation to Kenya, since the Court opened an investigation in March 2010. The Women’s Initiatives is a leading global gender advocacy organization.
The organization will hold a Press Conference on Wednesday 30th March 2011 at the Serena Hotel from 7.00- 9.00 am to talk about the need for accountability for gender-based crimes through the ICC as well as through domestic prosecution of these crimes within the Kenyan legal process.
The press conference will be moderated by Brigid Inder, Executive Director, Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice and will be addressed by leading women’s rights and gender justice advocates from several armed conflicts under investigation by the ICC, who will speak about the gender-based crimes and sexual violence committed against women in Kenya, Darfur, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic.
The speakers include Betty Kaari Murungi, Vice Chair of the Kenya Human Rights Commission, Wangechi Wachira, Executive Director, CREAW, Kenya, and Amira Khair, Sudan Programme Officer, Women’s Initiatives for Gender Justice. The panelists will talk about the prevalence and impact of gender-based crimes committed in the conflicts currently under investigation by the ICC, the work of gender justice advocates calling for accountability, and the need to support the participation of women in brokering ceasefires, negotiating peace agreements and sustainable peace.
